IN 2006, about 300 families of Sitio Agusuhin in Subic, Zambales were forcibly evicted from their land. The government had entered into a deal with Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co., owner of the biggest shipbuilding facility in the country.
Four years after, the villagers claim they have yet to receive full compensation from the Korean company. In Barangay Cawag, their relocation site, the community has limited access to basic services. Most continue to struggle with little or no income as the fishermen were robbed of their usual fishing grounds and the women were left with no means of livelihood.
The audio slideshows were produced by five photographers during a two-day training, “Thinking Beyond Stills: A multimedia course for photojournalists,” by VERA Files, in partnership with the Canadian Embassy. The trainers were multi-awarded phojournalist Luis Liwanag and VERA Files trustees Luz Rimban and Yvonne Chua.
