A short video on TikTok is erroneously claiming that President Ferdinand Marcos has signed into law the bill increasing the daily minimum wage of workers in the private sector by P100. This is not true.

While SB 2534 has been approved on third and final reading in the Senate, it is not yet a law. A bill becomes a law only when it is passed by both houses of Congress and approved by the president.

On Feb. 20, a TikTok user published the two-minute video with this text superimposed throughout its entire run:

Dagdag na P100 na sahod inaprubahan na ni PBBM. Mabuhay ang bago (sic) Pilipinas, mabuhay ang Pilipino

(Additional P100 increase in wages has now been approved by President Marcos. Long live the Philippines, long live the Filipinos)”

The video showed a clip taken from the official Facebook page of Sen. Bong Revilla Jr. where the lawmaker is seen lauding the Senate for passing Senate Bill (SB) No. 2534, also known as P100 Daily Minimum Wage Increase Act of 2023. Revilla is one of the co-authors of the bill.

The approved Senate bill has been transmitted to the House of Representatives for its concurrence. Several measures seeking higher wage increases are scheduled for deliberation this week in the Lower House, whose members say that the P100-increase approved by the Senate is inadequate to meet workers’ daily needs.

This TikTok video emerged shortly after 20 senators voted in favor of SB 2534.  Four senators were absent during the time.

TikTok user thetruthandfacts published the incorrect video, garnering over 1.8 million views and 92,700 interactions.
